Good morning. This is Melanie Asmar with Chalkbeat Colorado.
Back in 2016, shortly after I started at Chalkbeat, I wrote about a charter school called Wyatt Academy. It’s one of Denver’s oldest charters — and at the time, it was struggling to improve its academics. Denver Public Schools was considering closing Wyatt, but the district’s school board decided to give Wyatt one more chance.
In the years since, Wyatt has boosted its test scores, earning the highest possible state rating, and expanded its services to the community, including a free clothing boutique and laundromat.
But now Wyatt’s own board of directors is considering closing the school. The reason they cite? Declining enrollment. Teachers and parents are pushing back against the decision and asking the Wyatt board to reconsider — or resign.
